Tinny Farm, Bridgerule

The Bridgerule Tax Assessment records for 1816-1829 show Richard Banbury at Tinney, a tiny village about three miles southeast of Bridgerule, and only a mile from Pinkworthy. Baptismal records for his children refer to Richard as of "Tineo". Tineo and Tinney appear in records for the same place, so Tineo may be the name of the farm located in Tinney. In his will, Charles, Richard's father gave to him "all that tenament in Tinney in the parish of Bridgerule, called Sleemans Tenement with all the appurtenances thereto belonging".

Richard, his wife, Mary nee Cornish, and four children emigrated to America in 1832, just two years after his father died. On June 26th, 1832, he purchased a parcel of land in Jefferson Twp, Knox, Ohio from William Starner. He returned to England, aparently by himself and sailed back in 1835 on the Cosmopolite with three of his brother's children. He appears to have persuaded alot of his friends and relatives to follow him to Ohio, including the Hicks, Harris, Colwill and Allin families.

A deed found in Mt Vernon, Ohio, dated 4th July, 1835, shows that Richard and his wife Mary, sold land to Andrew Hicks. Richard was Andrew's cousin, his father Charles was the brother of Andrew's mother Joanne, who had married Andrew Hicks, on the 28th, September, 1791 in Launcells.

The census of Jefferson Twp, Knox County for 1850, shows Richard Banbury, (50), farmer with real estate valued at $3,000, with Mary (56), Richard (22), Hannah (20) and John (17) all born in England. Living with him also was his brother, Thomas (62)

BANBURY, RICHARD , deceased, Jefferson township; was born in Devonshire, England. in 1791. He married Miss Mary Cornish in 1814, who was born in Devonshire, England in 1795. He, with his wife and four children emigrated to America in 1832, and located in Jefferson township, Knox county, Ohio. His first purchase of land was from William Starner, June 26, 1832. The farm is now owned by his three sons, Charles, Richard and John C. By the new township line that was run a few years since, the farm is now in Union township. He lived on the same farm and followed farming and stock raising as his vocation until his death. Mr. Banbury and wife raised a family of six children, four born in England, viz: Charles, Mary A., Elizabeth and Richard. Two were born in Jefferson township, Knox county, Ohio, John C. and Hannah. Richard and Margaret Kirby (Back to parents)

Richard Banbury was born 13 Jan 1827 in Bridgerule, Devon, and died 17 Sep 1906 in Ohio. He married (1) Margaret Kirby. He married (2) Ellen A Wilkins 04 Oct 1899 in Ohio.

Richard did do well….. He was a water agent which was a very powerful position because he determine who got water and who didn't!!!! It was absolutely necessary to have this water for the hydraulic mining that was practice. It was environmentally a DISASTER! And eventually outlawed…. But while used, water was king!!!!. In 1860 Richard was living in California and his real estate is recorded as $2,000 and his personal estate as $1000. Richard had several gold mines and was a partner in many, including Kirbys and Daughertys where he probably first met Margaret, who was married to Dennis Daugherty, who died just before the birth of their son, William D Daugherty.

After he married Margaret, he decided it was time to return to Ohio, and went home and basically retired at about the age of 40. He is sometimes listed as a farmer, but in his will he left his son a five acre garden plot, with a comment that the garden was the focus of all of his efforts.

Child of Richard Banbury and Margaret Kirby is:

      • Charles K Banbury, born 1868 in California, USA. (Bill Banbury's branch)

Charles K Banbury was born 1868 in Union, Knox, Ohio and married Hallie Armstrong .

Charles Banbury & Hallie

Charles K., the son of Richard Banbury (son of Richard Banbury and Mary Cornish,) and Margaret Kirby married a very young Hallie Armstrong, (Hallie because she was born on Halloween,) in 1891 when he was about 22. They had two children Auralea and Owen Demont. When Charles K. married Hallie she was not of legal age and her father had to sign a consent form, which was witnessed by William Daugherty. Charles's half brother. Nothing more is known of Charles until he joined a volunteer unit from Mount Vernon, Knox County and this unit went to a training camp not too far south of Missionary Ridge for training. They then embarked on a troop ship in Newport News, VA and sailed to Cuba. The unit the Charles K. was with didn't see action, they were held in reserve in the NW corner of the island and Charles K. was hospitalized. He remained there until his unit was sent home.

. Many were sent home when they got sick but Charlie stayed, perhaps because he was too sick to travel alone. He arrived home about December 1899 and there was a big ceremony where the company was discharged and then the men released… He then filed for a pension. Well, next, the family story is that he got onto his horse and buggy to go to work one day and the horse and buggy come home empty! And that's IT!!!! NOTHING MORE!!!! EVER!!!

The census reports of 1860-1880 shows the family unit, and then the 1900 census shows Hallie with the children and no Charles K. and we can then follow Hallie to Chicago, and subsequently Owen and Auralea to Madison and NYC.

"Hallie was a very beautiful woman, prim and proper to the extreme!!! A real English Lady. As she grew old, it became apparent that she could not live alone in Chicago. She had a burglar attempt to crawl threw a transom window above her rear entry of her third floor apartment. She went out with her cane and beat the man down to the ground and chased him down the stairs. This was cause for my father to decide to bring her to Madison to live with our family, in 1955. She was NOT happy, and she struggle after being very independent for so many years, and she missed her Chicago…. So she moved back. While she lived with us, we observed that she would never leave the house without hat a gloves, even when she was taking trash to the garbage can. Very precise and articulate person! Never a hair out of place!!! I wish that I had been older and had the chance to talk to her and understand.

It was in her family bible where she had a letter written by Richard Banbury, (married to Margaret Kirby Daugherty) that he had written to his parents in 1849 that stated that he had safely arrived in California, all those that he had travelled with died along the way. He told his parents that he would remain in California for a specified period of time and then return to Ohio. He returned in 1868 after the birth of Charles K. in California.

Hallie did remarry after her children had grown and left home …. She married a William Mansbridge who was a widower and he died in the 1940's. Hallie did not do well after the she lost her only son, her only daughter, and her husband all within about a 5 year period. She struggled the rest of her life and died alone in Chicago.

In a short autobiographical sketch by Charles's half brother, William Daugherty, itt states at the time it was authored, in 1928, that he is the only survivor of the siblings of Margaret Kirby (Daugherty/ Banbury)... this would include Charles K. Banbury..... So, some knew where Charlie K. went or what happened to him. Also, after mustering out of the Infantry regiment there was a US census taken in 1900 and it lists Hallie with the two children, and she claims to be married but there is no Charles there.....I have been of the opinion that maybe he went back to Cuba because of some cute chick!!!! But, what ever he did, he was a master at hiding".....by Bill Banbury

Children of Charles Banbury and Hallie Armstrong are:

  • Auralea Banbury. b: SEP 1891 in OH  m. Pete Bloom, Chicago, IL  d: Long Island, NY 1946- no children
  • Owen Demont Banbury. b: DEC 1893 in OH m. Emma Edna (Jean) Atkinson Chicago, IL  1916  d. Madison, WI 1942 One child: Raymond William Banbury b. Oct. 25, 1916. Recorded on Owen's army call up papers during the first world war, he states that his dependants were his wife, child and mother, so he was obviously supporting Hallie at this time.

Owen Dermont Banbury

Owen Demont Banbury

Owen's M.I. in Madison, Winconsin

By 1920, Owen had married Emma Edna (Jean) Atkinson and they were living in Madison , WI with their son, Raymond, (Bill's father). Owen died 1941 and is buried in Madison , Winconsin . Grandma Jean was born Emma Edna Atkinson, to Margaret Ford and William Atkinson in Ailsa Craig , Ontario , Canada in 1899. Bill's Grandma Jean died in 1962 in Chicago .

In the 1930 Census Bill's grandparents and father were living in Madison . It's interesting that his grandparents lived at the same address from the time the moved to Madison and his parents lived above them when they married in 1936 and continued there until Bill was about 9 years old… Bill recalls living at 612 South Brearly and has a recollection of the family being on the second and third floor of this structure. He doesn't have a recollection of his grandparents at this location, although he recalls going to meet the milkman and the iceman as they drove their horse drawn wagons down the street and made their deliveries… "Feeding apples and carrots to the horses and having the ice man chip some ice down to us on those hot summer days… what thrills!!"!

For more information on this branch, contact Bill Banbury, Owen's grandson. He has extensive research on his family.
